Keith Wyness: This is why Nicolas Raskin wants to quit Rangers

Nicolas Raskin’s departure from Rangers could be inevitable if Danny Rohl does not guide the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title this season.

That is according to former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, who exclusively told Football Insider that European football could be the deciding factor on whether the 24-year-old departs Ibrox in the summer.

Football Insider recently revealed that Rangers could be forced to sell Raskin for a cut-price deal, with his contract set to expire next year.

Now, this could easily happen in the next few months, with Rangers in serious danger of not qualifying for the Champions League.

European football deciding factor in Nicolas Raskin’s Rangers future

On top of the prize of lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy if Rangers finish top, the club that ends the season at the summit is also awarded a place in the Champions League play-off round.

This means you’ll only have to win one tie to reach the league phase and unlock all of the financial benefits from this.

In comparison, a second-place finish sends you into the Champions League second qualifying round, a significantly harder route, while third-place takes you to the Europa Conference League, depending on the winner of the Scottish Cup.

Therefore, not only is pride and glory on the line for Rangers in the battle for the title, but the potential to realistically reach the Champions League’s league phase.

As a result, speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes that this could be the deciding factor in Raskin’s Rangers future.

He said: “Well, again, I think this is going to come down to the next few games to a degree.

“If Rangers win the title, then I think that, you know, they’re going to be wanting to keep Raskin, and I think there could be a way for him to do that, particularly if there’s a chance of European football.

‘But as I mentioned before, the Scottish coefficient is very difficult right now. And I think if Raskin wants European football, which is what I’m hearing is why he’d want to leave, then he’s going to have to make a move elsewhere to one of the other top clubs in Europe.

“He is a talent, and I think it would be up to Rangers. But if they are going to push the boat out, then maybe that’s one area that they could try and renew his contract if they’re challenging for that European space.”

Rangers and Celtic’s dire European campaigns have haunted Scotland

Both Celtic and Rangers have massively underperformed in Europe this season.

Neither reached the Champions League’s league phase, and while the Hoops are still in the Europa League, they are predicted to exit when they face Stuttgart.

As a result, this will have a lasting effect on Scotland’s coefficient, with Aberdeen, Hibernian and Dundee United also failing to impress.

This campaign, they have only earned a combined 4.600 points, which has caused them to tumble down the rankings to 18th as it stands.

With multiple countries now having teams that regularly impress in Europe, it remains to be seen if the Scottish clubs can bounce back next season.
