Keith Wyness: Wolves fans will ‘enjoy’ the Championship as 25% price cut revealed
Wolverhampton Wanderers will still be able to fill Molineux in the Championship if the club are winning matches.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Wolves announced season ticket prices would drop by at least 25% next season.
It comes as Wolves are on the verge of Premier League relegation with Rob Edward’s side 13 points from safety with seven games left to play.
Wolves will play in the Championship for the first time since the 2017-18 season, having become a regular fixture in the Premier League across the last seven years.
The club will suffer a reduction in matchday and broadcast income, and are set to lose their star players in the summer transfer window.
Wolves to create ‘flexible pricing structure’ on Championship return
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – said he had to “face the same issues” on ticketing when he was at Aston Villa.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes dropping down to the Championship will not deter fans turning up to games.
| Turnover | £177.7m |
| Net Loss | £14.3m |
| Matchday Revenue | £16.2m |
| Commercial Revenue | £28.8m |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, I walked into Aston Villa when they’d just been relegated into the Championship and I had to face the same issues.
“And what we found was that actually the fans still turned up in numbers on match day. Yes, we had to keep the pricing structure more flexible, perhaps a different, you know, A, B, C, D sort of ratio of pricing for games, and being more lenient on cup games, and those sorts of things.
“But overall, the fans did turn up because they also appreciated seeing the team winning again. And in the Championship, that’s a big factor. And a lot of the fans at Villa said to me that obviously they’d love to go back up, but they didn’t mind seeing the team performing well in the Championship and actually enjoyed the Championship as a league. It’s a very competitive league and some decent football in many stages.”
Wolves keen to agree Angel Gomes deal
Sources have told Football Insider that Angel Gomes would be reluctant to move to Wolves permanently when his loan deal expires.
Wolves hold an option to purchase the midfielder for £6million, but the 25-year-old has little desire to play in the Championship next season.
Gomes has made an impact during Wolves’ recent upturn in form, starting four Premier League games since his arrival from Marseille.
