Kemar Roofe shares how Leeds have been transformed into something special
By Will Butcher
Kemar Roofe believes that the confidence of the Leeds squad is the reason for their assault on the Championship top six and transformation into “something special”.
The 23-year-old attacker opened his Leeds account on Saturday, as the Yorkshire giants secured a convincing 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Roofe, a £3million summer signing from League One outfit Oxford United, claimed that the belief on the training ground has been Leeds’ secret weapon as they go from relegation candidates to promotion hopefuls.
“There is something special developing here,” Roofe told the Daily Star. “Particularly with the start we had where everyone was writing us off, but in camp we had the belief and we knew what we could do.
“We had the confidence but every day we work hard and that’s showing in the game. We are not getting too carried away, we are just focusing on the performance, not the results.”
Roofe has been one of the central figures in Leeds’ turnaround in form, as they sit in a lofty fourth position after leapfrogging Birmingham on the weekend.
A former West Brom youth player, Roofe moved to Elland Road this summer after winning the League Two Player of the Year with a superb goalscoring tally of 26 strikes in 49 games.
Roofe’s first goal saw Monk’s side take the lead against Villa, rising higher than goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini to head Leeds into the lead before Chris Wood bundled in a second late on.
Garry Monk’s side have won four of their last five Championship outings, with wins coming against Rotherham, Norwich and Burton as well as Villa.
They next face Chris Hughton’s high-flying Brighton side on Friday night, with the chance to go third in the Championship table.
