Kendrick Lamar ‘chose Aston Villa over Tottenham’ after Super Bowl show

Kendrick Lamar “chose” Aston Villa over Tottenham following his Super Bowl show, Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed.

The US star is set to perform at Villa Park alongside SZA in the summer after headline the Super Bowl half-time show on 9 February as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs.

The two teams met on Sunday (9 February) in the FA Cup fourth round, with the Midlands side emerging 2-1 victors, as Jacob Ramsey opened the scoring in the second minute when Antonin Kinsky’s mistake gave Villa an early lead.

Kinsky gave away a penalty against Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Liverpool on 6 February, and was at fault again against the Villains.

Morgan Rogers doubled Villa’s lead in the 65th minute, and despite a first-goal for Mathys Tel who was signed from Bayern Munich on Deadline Day, Tottenham were knocked out of their second domestic competition in two games.

Marcus Rashford was signed by Aston Villa from Man United in the winter transfer window, and the English forward made his debut off the bench against Spurs.

Agbonlahor said on X “Spurs apparently wanted Kendrick and he chose Villa”, a comment apparently making light of Rashford’s decision to join Villa after rejecting Spurs.

Despite what Agbonlahor posted, Lamar will also be performing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 22 July.

Football Insider Verdict

Whilst Rashford’s move from Man United to Villa dominated headlines, Marco Asensio went slightly under-the-radar.

The Spaniard is a three-time Champions League winner, from his time at Real Madrid, and despite his time at PSG being mildly underwhelming, Asensio is still an unbelievably talented player.

Coming off the bench in the 67th minute, Asensio showed his talent on the ball with some deft touches and clever passes.

It will be interesting to see where Unai Emery uses Asensio on the pitch, given Roger’s fantastic performances behind the striker this season.

Donyell Malen was left out of Villa’s Champions League squad for the knockout rounds, and that may show Emery’s intent to use Asensio as his primary right-winger this season.

Villa fans were left suitably impressed by Rashford as he also joined Asensio on the pitch in the 67th minute.

Marcus Rashford joined Aston Villa despite Spurs links

Emery was given a surplus of additions to his squad in January, with Axel Disasi, Andres Garcia and Malen joining Rashford and Asensio as new Villains.

For Ange Postecoglou, despite having a squad riddled with injuries, he was only given Kevin Danso and Tel as outfield additions.

The stark disparity between the two team’s fortunes was on display when the two faced, with Archie Gray and Djed Spence once again forced to play out of position to cover for Spurs’ absent stars Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
