Emiliano Buendia is an “unbelievable” signing for Aston Villa but the club must ensure their expectations don’t get carried away ahead of next season.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Villa confirmed the signing of the Norwich playmaker on Monday.

This site revealed on Sunday that the Argentine, 24, chose Villa over fellow suitors Arsenal because of their ambition to smash the Premier League glass ceiling.

Football Insider broke news the following day that the deal taking him to the Midlands club is worth a basic £33million plus £5m in add-ons.

It is understood that the Argentine’s contract will be worth approximately £75,000-a-week and that takes the total cost of the deal to at least £57m.

Kenny claims that the finances involved prove Villa have “ridiculous money” to spend but warned them not to set their expectations too high ahead of 2021-22.

“Buendia is an unbelievable player and I’m surprised Norwich let him go,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“I think they need to consolidate. They only just stayed up the season before last.

“They had an amazing season last season but died off a little bit towards the end. But you need three, four, maybe even five seasons consolidating to be able to build.

“You just need to calm down and not look too far ahead. If you said to Villa they can finish mid-table again, I think they’d snap your hand off.

“They can keep strengthening from there because this signing shows they have got ridiculous money to spend.”
