Kevin De Bruyne has had ‘absolute disaster’ amid Man City latest – pundit

Paul Robinson has claimed Kevin De Bruyne will be glad to be returning to Man City after a “disastrous” World Cup with Belgium.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested the 51-year-old’s early exit will be welcomed by City manager Pep Guardiola.

De Bruyne and Belgium produced one of the shocks of the World Cup by crashing out in the group stages.

The centre-midfielder caused a stir after claiming that Roberto Martinez’s side were “too old” to win the tournament.

As reported by The Sun (7 December), De Bruyne has jetted off on holiday to Lapland before retuning to Manchester later this month.

When asked by Football Insider if Belgium’s early exit could benefit Man City, Robinson said: “It is massive for Man City but an absolute disaster for Belgium.

“You can only imagine what the English press would have been like if we went out in a similar way to Belgium. They were one of the favourites going into the tournament.

“It must be a difficult time for De Bruyne. There was clearly a lot of unrest in the camp when he came out and said they were too old. I thought he was just playing their chances down but it didn’t sound like his teammates saw it that way. It was a tough World Cup for him.

“I’m sure he will be glad to get back to Man City. It is much better for Pep Guardiola that De Bruyne is only gone for half a tournament.”
