Kevin De Bruyne sends message to Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool announcement

Man City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has sent a message to Virgil van Dijk after confirmation was finally issued over the centre-back’s future at Liverpool.

Amid the Reds’ charge to the title, the uncertainty around expiring contracts for key players has provided a running subplot at Anfield this season.

Last week, Mo Salah committed his future to Liverpool for a further two years, securing his future on Merseyside until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.

However, Trent Alexander-Arnold looks as though he is set to leave to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer.

Like the pair, there have been questions about Van Dijk and his future at Liverpool, with his contract also due to expire at the end of the season, although they have now officially been answered.

Virgil van Dijk secures new contract at Anfield

On Thursday (17 April), it was announced that like Salah before him, Van Dijk has now put pen to paper on a new two-year deal at Anfield.

That ensures he too will remain with Liverpool until the summer of 2027, and it has been reported he will retain his status as the highest-paid defender in Europe with this new contract [The Athletic].

After the news of his new deal had been revealing, Van Dijk took to Instagram to react to that confirmation, posting an announcement video along with the caption: “It was always Liverpool”.

De Bruyne himself is set to leave Man City in the summer, when his deal with the Reds’ rivals expires after ten years at the Etihad.

Even so, the midfielder still appears happy for Van Dijk that he is set to stay on Merseyside, as he commented on that post by the Liverpool star with the words: “Congrats my man”.

Liverpool given major boost with defender deal

Football Insider Verdict

Even though he is now 33-years-old, Van Dijk has been a standout performer for Arne Slot‘s side in their apparent march to the Premier League title this season.

As a result, keeping the centre-back ought to be a major boost as Liverpool look to add more trophies to their cabinet in the years to come.

It has felt for some time as though the Dutchman would be extending his contract on Merseyside, though in football nothing is ever certain until it is official.

With that in mind the fact this has now been announced and confirmed will be a big relief for everyone connected with Liverpool.
