Kevin Phillips blown away by ‘Phenomenal’ Sunderland update via Davison
Kevin Phillips has been blown away by Sunderland fans’ support after the club announced a major season ticket update.
The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest from Sunderland’s chief operating officer Steve Davison.
During a recent meeting with a supporter’s group, Davison confirmed the club has sold approximately 21,000 season tickets ahead of next season.
Sunderland are preparing for their fourth consecutive League One campaign after losing in last season’s playoff semi-final.
Lee Johnson’s side were beaten 3-2 by Lincoln over two legs.
The Black Cats’ torrid end of season form saw them drop out of the automatic promotion places after a strong start to Johnson’s reign.
The ex-Bristol City boss was cornered by angry fans after the loss to Lincoln and received abuse after his side’s poor showing.
Phillips insists, despite those scenes, that Sunderland fans were always going to come back to the Stadium of Light.
“They don’t disappoint do they? The Sunderland fans,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“I’m not surprised. I’m sure there will be more before next season starts.
“No matter how frustrated they were after that last game when people surrounded Lee Johnson.
“A lot of people said they wouldn’t step foot back in the Stadium of Light. But once the dust settles, they are football fans.
“They will get behind their club. They will do it in abundance again next year. It shows how passionate those supporters are.
“21,000 in League One is just phenomenal really. Let’s hope the club can finally give those loyal fans something to cheer about next season with a promotion.”
In other news, Kevin Phillips thrilled by ‘great news’ he’s heard from Sunderland director.
