Kevin Phillips ‘can’t believe’ what Celtic board have done now after club announcement
Celtic have scored a major PR own-goal following their decision to begin the season ticket renewal process without a manager in place.
That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Glasgow giants announced the news on their club website last week.
The 1967 European Cup winners are still without a permanent manager after Neil Lennon left the club in February.
John Kennedy took the reigns as caretaker manager until the end of the season while the Hoops hierarchy stepped up their pursuit of Lennon’s successor.
Ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was the number one candidate but Celtic ruled out his appointment on Friday.
When asked by Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs if Celtic had scored a PR own-goal by beginning the season ticket renewal process, Phillips said: “Yeah, you would say so.
“I still can’t believe that they haven’t sorted the manager out. They’ve left it, and left it, and left it, so what you’re doing now is you start annoying the supporters.
“They’re annoyed enough as it is with the season they’ve had, so you think common sense should prevail, and maybe delay the news until you’ve got a manager on board and then get the crowd excited. After that, you can make your announcement over what you want to do, whether it’s hiking the prices up or lowering them.
“But for me, it just seems a bit of a daft decision, the timing certainly isn’t perfect.”
Celtic finished 25 points behind Rangers in the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership campaign, ending their hopes of securing a 10th successive domestic title.
They also failed to win a cup competition, making early exits from the Europa League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
