Kevin Phillips makes ‘huge money’ claim as Sunderland reportedly handed £100m boost
Kevin Phillips has welcomed proposals that will see Sunderland receive a portion of a £100million windfall from the Premier League.
The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted after the EFL received a significant boost from the top flight.
The Financial Times reports that EFL clubs will be given an extra £100million after a new Premier League TV deal was approved.
This windfall is on the top of the £140million solidarity payments the EFL receives every season.
Many clubs have struggled through the pandemic and are still paying their staff and players through the furlough scheme.
According to the Financial Times, the government said they would only approve the new TV deal if the EFL was given a chunk of the profit.
Phillips claims the EFL should take the offer and focus on securing a fairer distribution of Premier League parachute payments.
“Off the top of your head you think about £100million and yeah, wow, that’s huge money,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“But in the grand scheme of things, £100million is nothing from TV rights. Especially when you see how much is being spent there.
“Sometimes you have to accept what you’re offered. £100million is a lot. Even split between the EFL teams that’s a fair chunk each.
“I’m still behind dripping the parachute payments back down to the Championship. I’d be arguing that case more than the TV rights money.”
Earlier this month, The Telegraph reported that the EFL have asked for a portion of Watford and Norwich’s parachute payments.
The two sides are reportedly due £83million for achieving promotion while many clubs are facing uncertain futures due to the pandemic.
