The returning Callum Wilson can keep Newcastle United in the Premier League with the player confident of returning from injury after the international break.
That’s according to former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Newcastle’s chances of getting relegated.
The Magpies sit one place above the relegation zone and have a game in hand on Fulham who occupy 18th place.
The forward has been absent for Newcastle’s last six games with a hamstring issue.
When asked by Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs if Wilson will keep Newcastle in the league, he said, “Yeah, 100%. They’ve got that game in hand and are two points off the relegation zone.
“Him coming back in the next week or so will be a massive boost for Brucey and for Newcastle because he’s one player who can keep them in the league.
“I’ve always said I really like him. He’s an excellent player. Their problem is that they haven’t scored enough goals when Wilson’s been out.
“It would be great timing if he was back for when they reconvene after the international break.”
Wilson has scored 10 goals and picked up five assists during his debut season at St James’ Park with the club yet to win in the Premier League without their key man.
Newcastle scored just three times in the six games they’ve played with Wilson sidelined with his latest knock as he remains the club’s only regular goalscorer.
