Key midfielder ruled out of Tottenham clash against Southampton

By Dominic Toner

Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie has been ruled out of the Premier League match against Tottenham on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old has made 15 appearances this season across all competitions and the defensive midfielder could have been crucial in nullifying the Spurs attack.

The Saints manager Claude Puel confirmed on Friday that Clasie is out for “around ten days” as he recovers from a groin injury, as cited by Southampton’s official website.

Spurs travel to St Mary’s for a league clash next Wednesday, with Mauricio Pochettino and Victor Wanyama facing their former side.

The north London club suffered a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United in December, but have bounced back with consecutive victories over Burnley and Hull.

Pochettino’s side will be looking to make it three against Southampton, who are currently seventh-placed in the table.

Southampton are unbeaten in their last three league matches and will be confident of upsetting Spurs.

Clasie’s absence will be a big blow though to the side and the Dutchman gives consistency in midfield, but Puel has plenty of options in his squad that he can bring in.

Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen will be hoping to get at the Southampton goal and that may become easier without the defensive-minded Clasie.

Spurs are competing for a place in the top four this season and are currently just a point behind the frontrunners in fifth.
