Khusanov disastrous, Phil Foden leads: Man City player ratings vs Real Madrid

Man City were knocked out of the Champions League in disastrous fashion with defeat to Real Madrid in the second-leg of their knockout play-off.

Pep Guardiola‘s side had been leading 2-1 heading into the final minutes of the first leg at the Etihad last leg, before a late collapse saw them lose that match 3-2.

That gave them a one-goal deficit to overhaul in the second-leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday (19 February), they never looked like doing tha.

Instead, a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick securing a 3-1 win on the night and 6-3 victory for Real Madrid, with a late tap-in from Nico Gonzalez barely a consolation for the Premier League champions.

Ederson – 5

Ederson was culpable for the collapse in the first-leg, the goalkeeper was in no man’s land for the opener, couldn’t do much about the other though.

Abdukodir Khusanov – 3

Another tough game at the start of his Man City career for the defender who was given a torrid time by Vinicius Junior in particular.

John Stones (off for Ake, ‘8) – 5

Went off with injury after a matter of minutes, a big concern for Man City after Stones’ recent fitness problems.

Ruben Dias – 4

Caught out by the ball over the top for the opener and struggled to help his backline gain any composure from there. He is not truly elite anymore.

Josko Gvardiol – 4

Sat down by Mbappe for his second and like the rest of his defence never really looked comfortable.

Ilkay Gundogan (off for Kovacic, ’77) – 5

It has been a tough season for the veteran and that was no different here as he struggled to exert control in the centre of midfield.

Nico Gonzalez – 4

A really tough night for another of the January signings for Man City, lost plenty of duels and picked up a booking, got his first goal for the club with a late tap in.

Savinho – 4

After an excellent performance from Savinho against Newcastle at the weekend, the winger offered little if anything against Madrid.

Bernardo Silva – 5

Endured a frustrating evening which was summed up when he fired well over with the game and tie already long gone.

Phil Foden (off for McAtee, ’77) – 6 – Player of the Match

The best of a bad bunch. Tried to make some things happen without much success. Caught out defensively for Mbappe’s hat-trick goal.

Omar Marmoush – 4

Led the line after Erling Haaland’s injury against Newcastle, but hardly got close to replicating his hat-trick from that match. Hit the bar from a free-kick in stoppage time, which Gonzalez tapped in. It’s one thing slaying domestic opponents, but he often looked miles off it against the big boys.

Nathan Ake (on for Stones, ‘8)4

Replaced the injured Stones but struggled just as much as the defenders who started.

Mateo Kovacic (on for Gundogan, ’77) – 5

Off the bench with the tie already long since decided.

James McAtee (on for Foden, ’77) – 5

Likely brought on to give Foden a rest ahead of a clash with Liverpool at the weekend.
