Kieran Maguire: Celtic could seal critical ‘victory’ over European elite after ‘fundamental’ reveal

Celtic and other “smaller” European clubs could seal a “victory” over the elite by reducing the portion of Champions League prize money based on a 10-year coefficient from 30 per cent to 20 per cent.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the European Clubs Association chief executive insisted that historically successful clubs deserved more of the money.

Charlie Marshall told the Times last week (21 November) that the current model works well and the coefficient is “fundamental to the whole construction of the European football pyramid”.

The format of the Champions League will change during the 2024-25 season and that has led to some calling for an overhaul in the way the money is redistributed.

“The comments by Charlie Marshall of the ECA are indicative that the European Club Association, whilst it is in theory there to protect the interests of all the clubs that compete in European competitions, is very much guided and in the hands of the larger clubs who want to protect the status quo and maintain the financial glass ceiling that exists in European football,” Maguire told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The most that a club like Celtic could hope for with regards to the 10-year coefficient which does certainly slant the distribution of the money to the established elite is a reduction of the portion of the money that is allocated on that basis from the existing 30 per cent.

“If they manage to get it down to 20 per cent, I suspect that would be deemed to be a victory for the smaller clubs who are essential to make European football more competitive.”
