Kieran Maguire 'disturbed' by Man City partnership as new deal announced
Kieran Maguire is “disturbed” by Benfica joining Man City and other European clubs in partnering blockchain-based fan engagement platform Socios.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the finance expert fears the project will gain “legitimacy” if clubs continue to become involved.
As reported by Sports Pro Media (7 June), Benfica have announced a new partnership with Socios which will see them become the first Portuguese club to launch the fan token.
The likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are already in partnership with the fan engagement platform.
Maguire pointed the finger at the press releases of such organisations which are “just buzzwords.”
“I don’t think it will have an impact on Man City’s tokens,” he told Football Insider.

“They are not substitutes for one another. If you are a Man City fan you are going to buy City tokens.
“It is a disturbing expansion of a product or service which no fans have ever asked for. Fans have never said this is what they want.
“The more big clubs that become involved the greater the degree of normalisation and legitimacy Socios gains off the back of this.
“It will not move the dial positively or negatively in regards to the interest in Man City.
“When I look at the press releases these organisations put out, it is just buzzwords. They talk about the drop, utility and engagement but it is ultimately a glorified half-time draw.”
