Kieran Maguire: Liverpool had no choice over Super League ‘monstrosity’
Liverpool had no choice but to withdraw from the Super League because of previous backlash from fans and politicians.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the latest proposal by A22 is a ‘monstrosity’.
Plans for a European Super League were revived this week after the European Court of Justice ruled that Uefa and Fifa “acted unlawfully” by blocking its creation.

Despite the tournament returning with a new 64-team format, all six Premier League clubs that were previously involved in the plans have released statements declaring that they will not be taking part.
Liverpool were the last of the Premier League clubs to withdraw from the plans, with their statement reading that their “involvement has been discontinued.”
Maguire believes that Liverpool had “no choice” but to withdraw due to club concerns over PR and possible sanctions from the government.
“Given the extent of the backlash against the Super League from football fans, commentators and politicians, Liverpool and their Premier League peers had no choice but to withdraw,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“They had very little choice but to try and distance themselves from the latest proposal and it is a monstrosity from Barcelona, Real Madrid and their cronies at A22.

“So from a public relations point of view, the logical thing to do was to put out a press release saying they want nothing to do with it.
“Especially with the prospect of legislation from the UK government and independent football regulator who will try to put the views of fans at a higher level than those of billionaires, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds and private equity.“
