Kieran Maguire makes £252m Tottenham transfer claim after confirmed news – ‘a growing phenomenon’
Tottenham have to do a “bit of juggling” with their finances due to a “growing phenomenon” that means they owe £252million in transfer payments.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Tottenham’s owed transfer payments and how it could affect the club moving forward.
Spurs’ 2021/22 accounts reveal that the club’s transfer debt has risen to £252million.

That figure is topped only by Manchester United in the Premier League, who owe a staggering £307million in transfer payments.
The North London club doesn’t have any money arriving from European football this summer to help handle that fee, but Harry Kane’s £100million sale to Bayern Munich will help to balance the books.
Maguire insists signing players on credit is a growing ‘phenomenon’ in the Premier League and is now just ‘part of the business’ for clubs such as Tottenham.
“Buying players on credit is a growing phenomenon in the Premier League,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“I would estimate that overall Premier League clubs will owe more than £2billion when we finally start to see the accounts next year.
“The 2022 figures indicated the figure of owed payments was around about 1.86 billion.
“Since then, clubs have clearly had a very active window in the summer of 2022.
“From a cash flow point of view, it does mean that Spurs might have to do a bit of juggling.
“We’ve already seen that take place since the closure of the Premier League window, with players being offloaded to Turkey and other markets where the window is still open.
“So I don’t see it as being prohibitive having this substantial amount of transfer fees outstanding.

“It’s just part of the business.
“For all of the faults that the club has made on the pitch, off the pitch they are a very, very slick machine.“
