Kieran Maguire: Man City and Liverpool set for ‘stand-off’ with 14 Premier League clubs

Man City, Liverpool and their ‘Big Six’ allies will apply pressure to receive a larger split of the new Premier League broadcast deal in a “stand-off” between the elite and the rest.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the owners of the ‘Big Six’ are pushing to change how broadcast money is distributed in the top flight.

The Premier League agreed a new broadcast deal this month worth a record-breaking £6.7billion over a four-year period.

The deal will allow 270 live games to be broadcast with all kick-offs outside of the 3pm blackout set to be shown by either Sky Sports or TNT Sports.

As per The Telegraph, the Premier League are considering a change to their distribution model from the 2025/26 season.

The change would alter the distribution ratio from 1.6:1 to 1.8:1, which would provide a bigger share of prize money to teams higher up the table.

As revealed by Football Insider, City would have pocketed an extra £20million under the new model based on the club’s £160million prize money from 2022/23.

Maguire believes changing the distribution model would hurt the competitiveness of the Premier League.

There’s two main issues when it comes to the new broadcast deal,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

The first is the size of the pie and the second is how it will be sliced.

The value of the deal is good by European standards – it’s certainly significantly higher than what we’ve seen in Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

But it’s still worth less per season than the Premier League was generating from the domestic deal in 2016/17.

So there’s not more money to be spread around but Man City and other clubs previously involved with the Super League are applying pressure to have a bigger slice of the money.

They feel that they are the drivers of interest in the Premier League.

It’s all to do with the money and I predict there will be a stand-off between the Big Six and the other 14 who will argue that the excitement of the Premier League needs to be preserved.

That’s achieved through an equal distribution model that incentivises clubs each match, so it will require the top clubs to stop being greedy.
