Kieran Maguire: Man City could make sensational Super League U-turn – ‘Money will talk’

Man City could sensationally still join the Super League plans if the organisers offer enough money to European clubs.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Super League proposal will not collapse despite multiple teams releasing statements this week.

Plans for a European breakaway league were revived this month after the European Court of Justice ruled that Uefa and Fifa acted “unlawfully” by blocking its creation in 2021.

When the initial plans were announced, City were among six Premier League teams to be involved in the project.

City released a club statement on Thursday (21 December) announcing that their stance on the Super League had not changed and they will not take part in the competition.

However, Maguire believes that City and their Premier League peers will re-enter talks if other European clubs are tempted to join by A22.

A22 will be busy pitching their new project to a variety of clubs,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

There has been a much more sympathetic response from southern European countries such as Spain, Italy and Portugal and so on than there has been from fans from Germany and England.

Ultimately, money will talk and determine the creation and success of this scheme.

If it is backed with enough money then clubs will consider it as there will be a fear of missing out.

That is why clubs such as Manchester City probably were involved in the initial Super League project in the first place – because they didn’t want to be left behind.

So if a large enough stash of money is put in front of chief executives, then they will be willing to talk because that’s business.

But where that money comes from is yet to be seen.
