Kieran Maguire: Man City have 'raised a few eyebrows' after £1billion-plus reveal

Kieran Maguire has claimed Man City may have “raised a few eyebrows” after being labelled the second biggest brand in world football.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the finance expert said commercial partners “want to be associated with the trophies and success.”

On 7 November, Man City announced revenues of £613million and record profits of £41.7million in their 2021-22 annual report.

According to Brand Finance, the Cityzens are worth £1.16billion as a brand.

The Premier League champions have subsequently overtaken Barcelona to second place in the rankings.

Only Champions League and La Liga winners Real Madrid have a bigger global brand in football.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on City’s commercial success over the past few years, Maguire said: “Man City being stated at the second biggest brand in football will have raised some eyebrows.

“Commercial partners want to be associated with trophies and success though. Manchester City have delivered success consistently by winning the Premier League in four of the last five seasons. They have also won some domestic cups.

“To further enhance the value of the brand they need international appeal. The best way to do that is by achieving success in Europe. The one itch that they have not scratched to date is winning the Champions League.”

Pep Guardiola’s side lost 2-1 to Brentford on Saturday (12 November).

They are second in the Premier League table heading into the World Cup.
