Kieran Maguire: Man United set for ‘Premier League record’ after £126m reveal

Man United are on course for a “Premier League record” in annual wage spend.

That is according to finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club’s most recent quarterly report.

The club posted total revenues of £126million for the three months ending September 2021, up from £109m in the same quarter last year.

United’s overall loss shrunk from £20.7m in 2020 to £10.2m as they cashed in on the return of fans and easing of pandemic restrictions.

But one of the headline figures from the document published on 17 November was the £88.5m the club dished out on wages for the quarter.

United spent £284m on wages in 2020-21 but signed high-earning stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane over the summer.

Maguire claims that, although they should be broadly happy with the report, the Red Devils are on course for a record-breaking wage outlay.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “The bounce back in terms of income will be welcomed by the club.

“The 21 per cent increase in merchandise shows the Ronaldo effect. That figure will also be impacted by crowds returning to Old Trafford.

“I think the most concerning thing is the rise in wages. They are headed for a Premier League record in terms of wage spend if this continues.

“That’s what the club will point to as an investment in talent. But the big issue for United is not the level of wages, it’s the quality of the purchases.

“They have been very hit and miss when it comes to recruitment. That will have to change if they are to be successful on the pitch.”
