Kieran Maguire: Newcastle on brink of ‘absolutely essential’ development after £246m reveal

Newcastle United could see commercial revenue rise by 1000 per cent over the next 10 years with the Premier League on the brink of agreeing new sponsorship rules.

That is according to finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “absolutely essential” development expected on Wednesday.

According to The Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace (7 December), the 20 clubs will meet this week to approve new rules for commercial deals with companies that have a prior connection to the club’s owners.

It is expected to open the door for Newcastle’s owners to secure major sponsorship from Saudi Arabia.

Maguire pointed to the exponential commercial growth at Manchester City under Sheikh Mansour when discussing Newcastle’s commercial future.

“It’s absolutely essential when you look at the three pillars of football revenue,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Matchday revenue will go up a little bit from the arrival of the new owners because fans who boycotted matches under Mike Ashley are back. There will be a small increase in that department.

“As far as TV money is concerned, that is negotiated centrally by the Premier League so they cannot effect that.

“That takes us to commercial income. If you look at commercial income under Ashley, it grew by 0.1 per cent over 13 years. It is an issued that needs to be addressed. It was not a priority under Ashley.

“The new owners will want to utilise the new interest in the club from the Middle East. If you look at Man City, their commercial income has gone from £23million in 2009 to £246million in 2020. It has gone up by a factor of 10.

” Newcastle’s was £19million in 2009 and is now £29million. That is clearly where the opportunity lies for Newcastle.”
