Kieran Maguire: Newcastle owners under investigation after confirmed Government news

It is ‘logical’ to assume that an investigation is taking place looking into any connection between the Saudi Arabia regime and Newcastle United’s ownership.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the ‘dismal’ answers provided by Premier League CEO Richard Masters.

Masters was questioned by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee on Tuesday (28 March), with Newcastle’s ownership a hot topic of discussion.

The ownership of the Tyneside club was brought into question, with uncertainty growing about who controls Newcastle and whether they have a connection to the Saudi government.

Following Newcastle’s £300million takeover in 2021, the Public Investment Fund – who owns 80 per cent of Newcastle – made a legally-binding assurance that they were separate from the Saudi government.

Masters refused to comment on Newcastle’s ownership and whether an investigation was taking place, and Maguire believes that plenty can be read into his answer.

Richard Masters had the opportunity to put this issue to bed by saying there was not an investigation into the Saudi Arabian regime and their involvement in Newcastle United,” Maguire told Football Insider.

He chose not to give that answer, so it is only logical to assume there is something in place.

“This will increase concerns from Newcastle fans as they’ll be worried that they could be thrown under the bus by the Premier League.

Overall, he had a pretty dismal time when facing questions.
