Kieran Maguire: Rangers could have ‘financial advantage’ over Celtic after £30m+ claim
Rangers can overtake Celtic financially if they win the league this season to qualify for the new Champions League format in 2024-25.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Champions League qualification is enough for Rangers to close the £36million gap to Celtic.
Rangers revealed a turnover of £84million in their latest 2022-23 accounts while Celtic announced revenue of £120million.
However, Philippe Clement has led Gers to the top of the Scottish Premiership where they are now just weeks away from winning a record 56th title and qualifying for the Champions League.
The prestigious European competition is undergoing a format change next season that is expected to increase revenues and the number of matches played.
Rangers title success will close £36m financial gap to Celtic
Maguire explained that whoever goes on to win the SPFL will be able to boast a financial advantage over their Glasgow rival.
“The introduction of the Swiss model by Uefa for the Champions League next season is going to involve a significant increase in revenues for clubs that qualify for the competition,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“In the case of Scotland, if Rangers qualify through winning the league, then there is the opportunity to address what is currently a £36million gap between themselves and Celtic.

“Those figures can be distorted, however, as both Rangers and Celtic have different models for their shirt sales and that is such a key element in Scottish football.
“But even so, there is a major opportunity for whoever wins the SPFL next season to have a financial advantage over their rivals.“
