Kieran Maguire reveals £20m+ Rangers payout ahead of Champions League showdown

Rangers would earn over £20million if they reach the Champions League group stage instead of the Europa League.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the economic importance of Rangers’ crucial qualification match against PSV.

After a tense 2-2 draw at Ibrox last week, Rangers will travel to the Netherlands to face PSV in the second leg of their Champions League qualification match on Wednesday evening.

As per official Uefa documents, clubs that qualify for the group stage earn a guaranteed £14million, which will climb to over £20million after market pool payments, coefficient payments and individual match prize money.

In comparison, Europa League qualification is worth just £3.5million for reaching the group stage.

Should Rangers reach the Champions League group stage, they’ll find out their opponents for the next round in Thursday night’s draw.

Maguire insists that Champions League qualification will earn Rangers more than triple what they would earn in the Europa League before even factoring in ticket sales.

Champions League qualification is important as far as Rangers are concerned,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

They can make three and a half times as much money from qualifying for the group stages than they would in the Europa League.

They will probably manage to sell tickets at higher prices in the Champions League too as demonstrated by the packages sold in the 2022/23 season.

Rangers

“So it is certainly desirable but not essential for Rangers.

If they are successful then they will be looking forward to facing some of the best teams in Europe and they will hope that they have a more successful season on the pitch as they’d be looking to enhance their Uefa coefficient.
