Kieran Maguire reveals Chelsea could actually make profit from Romelu Lukaku summer deal

Chelsea could make an accounting profit if they sell Romelu Lukaku for £37million this summer because his contract has been amortised.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Blues will make a cash loss on Lukaku but his sale will actually boost their Profit and Sustainability accounts.

It has been widely reported that Chelsea have set an asking price of £37million to sell Lukaku in the summer transfer window.

The Belgian was signed for a then-club record fee of £98million in 2021, but he fell out with manager Thomas Tuchel and has since gone out on loan to Inter Milan and Roma.

Chelsea are under pressure to raise funds through sales this summer to comply with financial regulations after multiple windows of heavy spending under new ownership.

As revealed by Football Insider, Chelsea plan to sell up to four senior stars this summer to balance their books.

Chelsea on track to make shock profit from Lukaku summer sale

Maguire revealed that Lukaku’s contract was also likely reduced by the London club after a period of inactivity.

There will be a big cash loss for Chelsea if Romelu Lukaku leaves for £37million,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

But you’ve got to look at it on a much broader perspective as Lukaku will have had his contract amortised for three years.

Also, if we look at their accounts going back a couple of years ago there was a £70million impairment of player values in the 2022 accounts.

Nobody knows for certain which players were involved, but given that Lukaku has not played for Chelsea since the end of 2022, you would imagine that his contract would have been written down substantially in that year as a consequence of that.

The vagaries of the accounting system means that Chelsea could actually make an accounting profit despite making a cash loss of £60million.
