Kieran Maguire shares view on ‘severe punishment’ for Chelsea after FFP breach

Chelsea may escape punishment from the Premier League altogether after reporting themselves over a potential FFP breach.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Blues’ cooperation with the investigation could reduce the severity of any potential punishment.

As reported by the BBC (9 August), the Premier League is investigating potential financial rule breaches by Chelsea during Roman Abramovich’s time as the owner of the club.

The club’s new ownership group reported issues of “incomplete financial information” between the years 2012 to 2019 to the Premier League and Uefa.

Uefa fined the London club £8.6million as a result of their financial breaches, while the Premier League is also now set to investigate.

When compared to Man City’s charges, Maguire believes Chelsea’s cooperation with the investigation will see them receive a more lenient verdict.

Chelsea self-reported themselves to the authorities with regards to unusual payments,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

This will definitely act in their favour in terms of any potential charges levelled with the Premier League.

Given that one of the charges levelled by the Premier League against Manchester City was non-cooperation with the investigation, this is at the opposite end of the spectrum.

This will only help Chelsea and the level of severity of punishment – if any – is likely to be significantly less than Man City.

City’s accusations were hotly denied by their management and hierarchy.
