Kieran Maguire slams £60m Man United deal – ‘it was an error’
Man United made an ‘error’ paying £60million to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea when he was entering the last year of his contract.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that United have over £300million worth of players that they have overpaid for.
The Manchester giants completed the £60million signing of Mount this summer, but the 24-year-old has made just 12 appearances and played just over 600 minutes since completing the move.

Mount was entering the final year of his Chelsea contract before completing his move to Old Trafford, meaning United could have entered talks over a free transfer this January if they waited.
Erik ten Hag has spent over £400million on new players since becoming United boss in 2022, but the Red Devils have struggled for form this season and have dropped down to eighth.
Maguire believes United’s recruitment team is to blame for making multiple errors while having the highest net spend in the Premier League over the past decade.
“Looking back on the £60million deal to sign Mason Mount after a modest season at Chelsea, it was an error by Manchester United’s recruitment team,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“It’s not the first time we’ve seen these errors at United, they have many players who have become peripheral rather than guaranteed first choices such as Jadon Sancho, Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.
“There’s around £300million worth of players who United fans will say are okay but are certainly not matching their value.
“Making the odd mistake when it comes to player recruitment is expected as nobody can guarantee success, but United have the highest net spend in the Premier League over the past decade.

“Not only are United paying too much for players, but they’re also paying them too much in terms of wages.
“This then means it’s more difficult to move these players on when things don’t work out.“
