Kieran Maguire slams ‘hypocritical’ Premier League after £40m Chelsea collapse

The Premier League are ‘hypocritical’ for stepping in and blocking Chelsea from signing a £40million deal with Paramount Plus.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Chelsea’s frustration towards the Premier League is justified.

The Londoners held talks with Paramount Plus over a £40million per season agreement to become the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor.

However, the Premier League blocked the deal amid concerns it could upset the league’s broadcast providers.

As reported by GiveMeSport, the Premier League cited the Deed of License as their reason for blocking the deal.

Following the collapse of Chelsea’s £40million agreement, Paramount Plus are now closing in on a deal to sponsor Inter Milan next season.

Maguire can’t understand the Premier League’s issues with the deal and believes there is ‘zero evidence’ to suggest that it could cause fans to change broadcasters.

Chelsea have some validity in being upset with the Premier League blocking their Paramount Plus deal,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

There are many financial service companies that sponsor football yet the Premier League is happy to have a relationship with Barclays.

So it does seem very hypocritical that they have come down hard on Chelsea in regard to this particular deal.

There’s close to zero evidence that suggests having the Paramount sponsorship on the shirt is going to cause viewers to swap broadcasters.

What is far more likely is viewers will make their mind up on the quality of broadcasting, and whether that broadcaster is indeed showing live Premier League matches.
