Kieran Maguire slams Man United ‘panic’ in Mason Greenwood U-turn

Man United ‘panicked’ when making a decision on Mason Greenwood’s return before facing backlash and making a U-turn.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about United’s poor handling of Greenwood’s situation.

The 21-year-old was sent on loan to Spanish outfit Getafe on deadline day after United reversed their decision to keep him at Old Trafford.

The Athletic reported that United CEO Richard Arnold intended to reintroduce Greenwood to the squad before the club faced backlash and reversed the decision.

The Red Devils have since been urged to donate any fee received for Greenwood to charities supporting domestic abuse victims.

Maguire slammed United’s hierarchy for their poor handling of the situation and insists they tried to ‘control the narrative’ of the story after realising they had misjudged public opinion.

If you wanted a textbook example of how not to handle a sensitive affair then Man United’s handling of the Mason Greenwood issue is close to that,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

They wavered in their initial decision and then it became clear they intended to bring him back until Adam Crafton from The Athletic scooped the story.

That then resulted in United releasing a panic press release to try and control the narrative of the story.

As soon as they realised the reaction from former players, personalities and the public was negative, they did a hurried U-turn and announced his departure.

“His departure was announced on the same day as many other significant stories.
