Kieran Maguire swipes at Mike Ashley as Newcastle behind-the-scenes £187m plan revealed

Newcastle United will use their upcoming Amazon documentary as a “trojan horse” to attract new sponsors and boost income.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the need for Newcastle to maximise their income streams.

Newcastle are set to be the latest Premier League club to invite Amazon’s film crew behind the scenes to film a documentary on the club’s season.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month (3 March) that the documentary will largely follow the club’s boardroom and business activities as opposed to keeping up with the on-pitch performances.

Magpies chief Amanda Staveley confirmed that Amazon does not view it similarly to their “All or Nothing” series, but instead are “focusing on the commercial side”.

According to Deloitte, Newcastle reported revenues of £187million in 2022, ranking them 20th in world football.

Maguire insists Newcastle will use the documentary to attract investors so they can improve their revenue in time for Uefa’s financial and sustainability rules, that is set to limit spending to a percentage of the club’s income.

The lack of growth of commercial income during the Mike Ashley era has left a void in Newcastle United’s finances,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Therefore, maximising revenue streams needs to be addressed quickly if the club is to compete with other Premier League powerhouses at the top of the table.

It’s especially important in light of the new financial and sustainability rules being introduced by Uefa which will impact clubs in terms of what they can spend if they don’t maximise their income streams.

It makes a lot of sense to showcase what Newcastle have to offer to commercial partners and sponsors, using the Amazon documentary.

The documentary will be used by the club as a trojan horse – a vehicle for the club to demonstrate to stakeholders the passion of the fans, what the surrounding area has to offer as well as the club itself as a key institution within the city.
