Kieran Maguire verdict on 'golden rules' for Liverpool after formal request submitted

Kieran Maguire has called for the Premier League to use their “golden rules” to prevent Liverpool from facing other ‘Big-Six’ sides the week before the World Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert suggested the FA and Premier League “get behind” the England team by manipulating the fixtures.

England begin their World Cup campaign on 21 November against Iran.

According to ESPN‘s James Olley (8 June), the FA have submitted a formal request to the Premier League asking for matches between the “Big Six” not to be scheduled on the weekend prior to the World Cup.

England manager Gareth Southgate is said to be concerned by the amount of time between the last domestic fixture and the first round of games in Qatar.

Premier League fixtures are randomly generated but “golden rules” can be applied in certain circumstances.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if the “golden rules” should be applied in this case, Maguire said: “We should be trying to get behind the England team as much as possible for the World Cup.

“There are many parties who rightfully have reservations about the way that the World Cup was awarded with regards to the lack of transparency in the process. It is now here though and England are going to appear in it.

“They could try to reduce the level of intensity of fixtures. You wouldn’t want Liverpool against Manchester City the week before players are due to go out.

“There is too many players who, under those circumstances, could be at risk. Players always try but there is an increased risk of overextension and injury in fixtures between the top sides in the Premier League.”
