‘Kieran Tierney to deny Andy Robertson dream Celtic move’

Celtic re-signing Kieran Tierney has likely Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson the chance to achieve his aim of playing for the Bhoys in the future.

The Reds star is now into the final year of his contract at Anfield, and speculation is emerging about a potential move away.

Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Robertson this summer, as Diego Simeone looks to strengthen his own squad.

However, there is still no guarantee that a move to Spain for the Liverpool icon will be completed in the current transfer market.

Indeed, Atletico are already said to be lining up Aston Villa ace Lucas Digne as a potential alternative to Robertson.

That could force the Scotland captain to explore potential alternative destinations in the near future if he does not extend his deal on Merseyside.

Andy Robertson move to Parkhead played down

The Scottish champions have already signed one left-back ahead of next season, with Tierney returning to Celtic from Arsenal following a six-year spell on the books at the Emirates.

Now, Ross McCormack believes that will end any chance of Robertson making his own move to Brendan Rodgers’ side either now or in the future, as a national-team style solution isn’t deemed likely at Parkhead.

While appearing on Clyde 1 SuperScoreBoard, one caller suggested a possible move to Celtic for Robertson at some point.

Andrew McLean then noted that the Liverpool star has expressed a desire to play for the Bhoys in the past, before asking McCormack if he could see that move happening.

In response, the former Rangers striker said: “Personally I can’t see it. If you remember I’ve been saying for the last couple of weeks that Kieran Tierney could play left centre-half for Celtic if they were going to keep Greg Taylor.

“But although Andy obviously would love to come back and play for Celtic I just can’t see that happening.”

As he was then asked if he means now or ever at all, McCormack added: “I’m going to say not at all because I think Kieran Tierney is going to stay there for years and years.”

When it was suggested they could play as they have done for Scotland with Tierney more central than Robertson, he continued: “I risk contradicting myself when I say this but I think Kieran Tierney’s best position is left-back.

“I think if needs must, a game here and there, he can go into centre-back and play in there, but I don’t think Kieran would want to do that for a full season, and that’s why I don’t think someone of the calibre of Andy Robertson would be brought to the club.”

Kieran Tierney signing means Celtic shouldn’t need Liverpool deal

Football Insider Verdict

At 28-years-old, Tierney is three years younger than Robertson, and he has signed a five-year contract at Parkhead.

That will keep him with Celtic until the end of the 2029/30 season, at which point Robertson himself will be 36-years-old.

By that time, the Liverpool left-back may be past the point where he is able to make the required impact the club would need for the level they play at.

Consequently, the chance of him getting the chance he wants to play for Celtic may now be out of reach, especially given as McCormack notes, both players are too good to play second fiddle to the other.

There is also the issue of wages, since neither player is likely to be on a small salary, and it would be hard to justify paying both a sizeable amount for only one to feature regularly.

Instead, that money could be used to add in other areas of the park that need strengthening more, meaning it is now hard to see Robertson getting the chance to play for Celtic that he apparently wants.
