Kieran Trippier: Pundit issues ‘massive’ Newcastle verdict after crushing new update
Kevin Campbell has claimed Newcastle “have got enough” to stay up despite Kieran Trippier’s “long-term” injury layoff.
The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, conceded that the 31-year-old’s absence will be a “massive blow” for Eddie Howe’s side.
Newcastle revealed on Monday (14 February) that Tripper has fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot after hobbling off in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa.
The Times claimed yesterday (15 February) that the England international could be sidelined until May.
Trippier had been the catalyst for Newcastle’s run of three straight league wins after scoring free-kicks in back-to-back games.
Campbell claimed those goals have contributed to the Magpies’ survival bid – which he suggests is close to coming to fruition.
“It’s going to be a massive blow,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“He was captain of the side as well, and obviously managed to get a couple of big goals after coming in.
“He brings so much experience to that side having obviously had the toughness of playing abroad and winning a title in a Diego Simeone team.
“He’s come to Newcastle and he’s up for the fight, but they’ve lost him – probably long-term.
“They desperately need someone like him in the trenches. But I think they’ve got enough, partly thanks to his goals, to stay up – they are looking like a tough outfit to beat.
“It’s a serious body blow but they will get through.”

Newcastle are out of the relegation zone and four points clear of danger following their recent purple patch.
Eddie Howe’s side face West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday (19 February).
