Klopp confirms key Liverpool defender will miss Man City

By Dominic Toner

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Joel Matip will be unavailable against Manchester City on Saturday.

The 25-year-old defender has not yet recovered from an ankle injury which has kept him out of action for the club’s last three games.

He has not featured since the 2-2 draw against West Ham, but team-mate Ragnar Klavan has proved to be an excellent replacement in the team.

Klopp has confirmed that centre-back Matip will be sidelined for the clash against Man City, as cited by the club’s official Twitter account.

Matip has emerged as an important player this season following his summer move to Anfield on a free transfer.

The Cameroon international has built a formidable partnership alongside Dejan Lovren and will now face tough competition to dislodge Ragnar Klavan from the starting XI.

He will definitely be missing from the crunch game against Man City as Liverpool host their title rivals.

Matip will be eyeing a quick return to the team, but Liverpool face a short turn around as they face Sunderland just two days after the Man City clash during a busy set of fixtures.

The defender has looked extremely impressive on his first taste of English football and is expected to play a major part in the club’s pursuit of the title.

In other Liverpool team news, Roberto Firmino would be omitted from a best combined XI with Man City players.
