Klopp ponders future of Liverpool 23-year-old after Bundesliga interest – report
By Derek Smithson
Bundesliga club Augsburg are eyeing a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the German side are keen on the 23-year-old and that has left Reds manager Jurgen Klopp pondering his future.
It is understood that the Merseyside club are not planning on selling the shot stopper, but interest in their player has held up other transfer deals.
The report details that Liverpool could sell third-choice goalkeeper Danny Ward to Premier League rivals Huddersfield for £5million, but it states they can not do so until the future of Karius is resolved.
Belgium international Simon Mignolet cemented his position as the number one at Anfield last year, while Karius wasted his opportunities and fell behind in the pecking order.
Meanwhile, Ward enjoyed his season-long loan spell at Huddersfield in the Championship and helped them achieve promotion via the play-offs.
Football Insider verdict:
Both Karius and Ward are two young goalkeepers who have the potential to become number one options in the future, with the former showing in glimpses his qualities. Karius endured a difficult first season in English football, but the same could be said about David de Gea when he first joined Manchester United. The 23-year-old could feature much more next year due to Liverpool’s involvements in domestic and European competitions, meaning Klopp should keep him at the club. He is only going to improve at Anfield over time and his £4.7million signing could still turn out to be a bargain fee. Mignolet’s position as number one is by no means assured and Karius could challenge for the starting position next year.
In other Liverpool transfer news, they are closing in on a deal for a 19-goal attacker.
