Kobbie Mainoo could be axed by Man United after ‘big’ development – pundit

Kobbie Mainoo could see his game time at Man United reduced if the club spend big this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie was adamant that the Red Devils will invest heavily in their squad for next season, which could prevent the teenage sensation’s progression.

Mainoo, 18, has had a breakout campaign this season and has even earned his first call-up to the senior England squad for the current international break.

Sources have told Football Insider (18 March) that United are in advanced talks with Mainoo over a new contract after his impactful performances under Erik ten Hag.

Kobbie Mainoo could lose Man United starting spot next season

McAvennie has been impressed by the youngster and was sure he’d be soaking in the knowledge of the senior stars around him, but doubted whether he will keep hold of his starting spot for the long term.

“Having players like Christain Eriksen around him – he’ll be learning so much,” he told Football Insider.

“Mainoo can talk and learn from them, but being in an environment like that game [against Liverpool in the FA Cup] is invaluable.

“When you’re playing youth games or under-21 games, it’s not the same.

“Senior games are where the young boys like Mainoo will learn so much.

Man United

“Man United have a good future and have some decent players on their hands.

“But I don’t know if Mainoo will have the time to flourish because, from what I’m told, Man United will spend big in the summer, and then he could be left out”.
