Kobbie Mainoo ‘leaving’ in January and what it means for Man United’s PSR
Man United’s financial position will be strengthened if they were to allow Kobbie Mainoo to leave the club.
That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley who has exclusively told Football Insider of the PSR benefit Man United would get from selling Mainoo.
Mainoo wants to leave Man United for more playing time after being frozen out of Ruben Amorim’s first-team plans.
Man United would want a buyer to meet their £40million valuation of Mainoo, with Premier League and European clubs all interested in the 20-year-old.

Man United don’t need to sell Kobbie Mainoo for PSR reasons
Mainoo came through the academy at Man United, so selling the midfielder will enhance the club’s PSR position, but speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley doesn’t believe this will a factor in whether a sale occurs.
“I don’t think PSR will be their sole focus. I think it’d be a happy coincidence, if you will,” Plumley said.
“We saw this in the summer with PSR and Manchester United. We saw a lot of people were looking at the wrong company. It’s a company called Red Football, which is where the PSR calculation sits.
“So despite the fact that we’ve seen they’ve had, well they’ve told us, they’ve had financial problems and plenty of media reports on that, the outlay that they spent in the summer, people were kind of scratching their heads, but they’re okay with PSR ultimately.
“If this were to go through, I think PSR is probably not the sole driver. Of course, it does benefit Manchester United in that sense as well, because you can book that as pure profit and you can book it in the year that it occurs.“

Mainoo is ‘biggest financial gain’ to Man United
Plumley went on to explain that if Mainoo has fallen out with manager Ruben Amorim, then selling the star would make the most sense from a financial position.
“If the player is desperate to go and the relationship has broken down, then, of course, he’s going to be one of the ones that you’re looking at going, well, that’s the biggest financial gain to us if he goes because of the PSR perspective on it and the pure profit,” Plumley said.
“So, yeah, I think if the player wants to leave, then that probably tells you everything about maybe what’s going to happen in January.
“And it will be a boost to Manchester United financially. Let’s say it doesn’t need to be the driving factor, but it will certainly be a boost.”
