Konsa and Ramsey respond to Lucas Digne’s new message amid Aston Villa exit whispers

Ezri Konsa and Jacob Ramsey have responded after Lucas Digne shared a new update amid rumours of his potential departure from Aston Villa this summer.

Digne has been with Villa since a January 2022 move from Everton, when he made the switch from Merseyside to the Second City for a reported fee of £25million [BBC].

The 52-time France international had been a mainstay at left-back for the Villans, but Ian Maatsen’s arrival at Villa from Chelsea last summer saw his game-time reduced in the 2024/25 season.

Unai Emery’s side’s failure to reach the Champions League for next term could mean that Digne is on his way out of the club soon, after The Athletic stated in May that his representatives had received enquiries about his availability from elsewhere ahead of the summer window.

Football Insider revealed on 20 June that Digne had opened talks over a move to join Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, with the La Liga outfit prepared to make an opening bid of £8m for the 31-year-old, so it certainly looks like his future lies away from the Second City.

Digne shares Instagram update away from Villa

Villa are believed to be holding out for £10m from Atletico, but they will surely be keen to cash in on him this summer after football finance expert Dan Plumley told Football Insider on Friday (11 July) that the Villans will be forced to sell at least one or two players to try and avoid further sanctions from UEFA after a recent fine.

The 31-year-old is not yet back training with Emery’s squad after representing France last month, with the Villa players who were on international duty not expected back at their Bodymoor Heath facility until next week [Birmingham Mail].

Digne has been enjoying his off-season with his family, and he took to Instagram on Saturday (12 July) to share a photo of himself on holiday with a half-full hourglass emoji as a caption.

Whether the caption can be taken as a hint about his Villa future being undecided right now is unclear, but both Konsa and Ramsey moved to like his post in response regardless of the meaning.

Digne should only join Atletico to be their first-choice left-back

Football Insider verdict

At 31-years-old, and soon to be 32, you could be forgiven for thinking that Digne would be winding down a career that has seen him represent his country at three major tournaments and play in France, Italy, Spain and England.

It certainly does not seem that way, however, as he still made 45 appearances last season and was Emery’s go-to man at left-back in Villa’s brilliant Champions League run.

Digne’s Villa career record

It comes as no surprise to see a club the size of Atletico interested in his services this summer, and Diego Simeone’s side have Champions League football and the potential to be in a title race on offer, but if he does harbour ambitions of making it to next year’s World Cup, then Digne should only join them if he is going to be first-choice.

Atleti recently let Reinildo leave at the end of his contract to join Premier League new-boys Sunderland, but also signed Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta while already having Javi Galan as back-up, so there is strong competition for places.

The Frenchman must make sure that he is going to be their main option if he does make the move back to La Liga, but he may not even have the chance to properly decide his next move if Villa are keen to let him leave and an interested club stumps up enough cash to sanction a sale.
