Kris Boyd has given Clement ‘big problem’ after new Rangers rant

Rangers boss Philippe Clement needs to stop making excuses after pundit and former player Kris Boyd said the side are ‘weaker’ than last season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie understands why Boyd, 41, is ‘hurting’ about the state of his club and believes Clement, 50, is running out of excuses after building the current squad.

While on pundit duty for Sky Sports after Rangers’ 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock, Boyd said, “Philippe Clement, because of the lack of Champions League money maybe, is having to clean up a mess that has been brewing at Rangers for a couple of years now.

“I think the recruitment has let the football club down after winning the title and I think Rangers are weaker now than what they were last season.”

Philippe Clement faces an uphill battle to turn things around at Rangers

The Glasgow club are six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen after missing out on the opportunity to close the gap on the top two after their 2-2 draw.

Clement’s side next face Romanian side FCSB in the Europa League as they seek to put a heavy 4-1 defeat to Lyon behind them in the previous round.

“There are only so many excuses he can come out with”, McAvenne told Football Insider.

“All of the players are his, and he can’t keep getting people for free and thinking they’re going to turn out to be world beaters, they may get one or two.

Rangers under the lights at Ibrox

“When you see Kris Boyd on the TV, he’s a big, big Rangers fan and it hurts him to go on there saying ‘They’re not even close, they’re not at it, they never control a game’.

“That’s a problem, when someone who hates talking about Rangers, when he’s coming out saying they’re not at it, that’s a big problem.”
