Kris Boyd predicts where Rangers will finish at end of season
By Harvey Byrne
Kris Boyd has backed former club Rangers to win the battle for second place in the Premiership.
The famous Ibrox side won promotion back to Scotland’s top flight last season after suffering administration in 2012, which saw them demoted to the Third Division.
They have performed to a very high standard in their first season back and currently sit in second place.
However, they trail fierce Glasgow rivals Celtic by 11 points, having played two games extra this season.
This means that Mark Warburton’s side will probably have to settle for second and a Europa League play-off spot this campaign.
But, with Aberdeen four points behind in third and Hearts trailing by five points in fifth it will not be an easy task.
Striker Boyd, speaking on Sky Sports News’ Premier League Daily show on Thursday has backed his old side to win the battle at the top, stating he “fully expects” them to stay in second.
“Last year they steamrolled everybody,” said Boyd. “This year it’s been a bit up and down, but they’re still second.
“They’ve come in for a bit of criticism after their performance at Tynecastle a couple of weeks ago, but they went and beat Hearts and Aberdeen off the back of that and they’ve got back into second position and I fully expect them to stay there.”
Boyd, 33, is currently in his third spell with SPL side Kilmarnock.
He has had an illustrious career, winning two Premiership titles with Rangers, alongside two Scottish Cups and two League Cups.
He enjoyed two spells at the Gers with his most recent one coming to an end in 2015.
In total he has played 212 times for Rangers with a return of 115 goals.
His former club are now preparing for a Friday evening clash against eighth placed Hamilton as they look to separate themselves from the chasing pack.
