Kyogo Furuhashi could ‘re-sign for Celtic after being badly advised’ in astonishing twist

Celtic could move to re-sign former striker Kyogo Furuhashi in the summer transfer window after he’s struggled to make an impact at Rennes.

The Japan international won three Scottish Premiership titles and the hearts of Hoops fans after arriving under Ange Postecoglou in 2021.

Rennes paid around £10million to land the 30-year-old in the January transfer window, while Portuguese winger Jota moved in the opposite direction after an impressive previous spell at Celtic Park.

Furuhashi sent an emotional message to Celtic fans in the wake of his exit, with the Parkhead faithful left scratching their heads as to the driving force behind the shock move.

Rennes are reportedly willing to let the forward leave for around £3.5million this summer after he’s failed to score in his four Ligue 1 appearances.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it would be a “no-brainer” for Celtic to bring Furuhashi back to Glasgow.

The Japanese registered 85 goals and 19 assists in 165 appearances for the Scottish champions before completing his move to France.

Kyogo Furuhashi could have been badly advised after Celtic exit

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested Furuhashi could have been badly advised by his agent following his Celtic exit.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It was weird.

“He went to Rennes and one of the theories was that he needed to get in Ligue 1, supposedly one of the top leagues in Europe, which I question, in order to get national selection for Japan.

“He was scoring goals for Celtic and wasn’t getting picked. Obviously, it hasn’t worked out. It doesn’t seem that he’s happy. I think he was a lot happier from what I could tell at Celtic.

“Which player wouldn’t be happy when you’re scoring goals and getting the adulation he was? I think he’s better off back at Celtic.

“I think I’ve seen £3.5million. It’s a no-brainer to take him back to Celtic for me. I think that he would see himself playing well in Europe again next year.

“I think he will get in the Japan national team. It just may be that they’ve got an abundance of talent in the particular position that he’s playing in.

“I’m afraid that happens sometimes in your career. I hope it wasn’t his agent that recommended him to go to France because, if it was, he’s been badly advised.

“I think he’s better off coming back to Celtic and igniting that fun again and seeing him play.”
