Kyogo Furuhashi: ‘Something bigger behind Celtic sale’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested there is “something bigger” behind the shock sale of Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Hoops may have seized an opportunity to bank the maximum resale value for the 30-year-old.

Celtic confirmed the departure of “icon” Furuhashi to Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais last week (28 January), with reports suggesting the deal was worth £10million.

Former Parkhead star Jota has returned to Glasgow from Rennes in a separate deal.

The Hoops were linked with several strikers in the closing days of the transfer window but could not complete a deal for a like-for-like replacement.

Football Insider revealed on 28 January that Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden had been identified as the top target.

Wyness claimed Celtic fans cannot “question” the board’s decision-making due to their recent success in Scotland and Europe.

Celtic fans ‘can’t question’ board after failing to land Kvistgaarden, says Wyness

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t know what went on behind the scenes with Kyogo.

“It seems there’s something bigger going on there, and I haven’t quite got to the bottom of it.

“He’s been performing well but there has obviously been something Celtic saw in terms of resale value coming in.

“Celtic certainly are performing well enough right now for fans to not question any decisions they are making.”
