Kyril Louis-Dreyfus: This is ‘the only way forward’ for Sunderland after ownership revelation – Phillips

Kevin Phillips has called for Kyril Louis-Dreyfus to buy out Stewart Donald, Juan Sartori, and Charlie Methven at Sunderland.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner believes a full takeover is “the only way” for the club to move forward.

The Athletic revealed on Tuesday (15 February) that Louis-Dreyfus owns just 41 per cent of Sunderland, contrary to fan belief.

The hugely unpopular Donald, Sartori, and Methven own 34 per cent, 20 per cent and 5 per cent respectively.

In statements to The Athletic (16 February), Donald and Methven revealed they would both be “happy” to sell their shares to Louis-Dreyfus.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Donald, Methven and Sartori selling their remaining shares, Phillips said: “In my opinion, it’s the only way to move forward.

“We all thought Louis-Dreyfus had a controlling share in the first place.

“If they are open to selling their shares, the quicker Louis-Dreyfus can get that done, the better for the club in the long run.

“The supporters are fed up. The team is not exactly pulling up trees on the pitch. You cannot even mask over this situation with that.

“This issue needs to be resolved for the better of the football club.”

A 2-1 loss to MK Dons on Saturday resulted in Sunderland slipping out of the play-off spots.
