Lawrence Shankland cited as Josh Windass told to reject Rangers offer
Danny Rohl should not be signing Josh Windass on loan in the January transfer window if he wants to move the club forward.
That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, amid rumours linking Windass with a return to Rangers.
The 31-year-old enjoyed a two-year spell at Rangers previously, scoring 19 goals and registering 13 assists in 73 appearances.
Windass played under Rohl during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, and currently plays for their Championship rivals Wrexham.
Rangers ‘can’t keep going back to the tried and tested’
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – doesn’t believe Rohl’s rebuild job at Rangers should include a move for Windass in January.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Rohl must put his own stamp on the Ranger squad.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yeah, look, I don’t think Wrexham would let him go, first of all, but I think it would be a mistake, I think, to come back on loan, because really, what are you going to get?
“Rangers have got to start building for the future, and they’ve got to bite the bullet. And a loan really is only just a sticking plaster. And they’ve got to face the fact that they’ve got to start building and getting players in who are their players. And Rohl’s got to put his own stamp on it.
“And, you know well, Lawrence Shankland has been the example of the older journeyman who’s still scoring great goals in Scotland and scoring frequently. Josh Windass had a reasonable period with Rangers before, as we know, but you can’t keep on going back to the tried and tested. You’ve got to start building your own squad. And I think Rohl would be better off doing that.”

Rangers appoint new advisor to aid January business
Rangers’ January transfer business could take them to the Scandinavian market after a new hire at the Glasgow club.
Stig Inge Bjornebye has joined Rangers as a football consultant and advisor, initially just for six months, to support Rohl in January.
The former Liverpool midfielder has been a sporting director with Rosenborg in Norway and AGF Aarhus in Denmark previously.
