Former Southampton star and current Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier has said that getting Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama back to fitness is the most important thing for Tottenham in the January transfer window.
Spurs have been missing their key defensive duo for some time as a result of their respective injury layoffs, which has left manager Mauricio Pochettino chopping and changing his side during the course of the season.
The Kenyan enforcer has made just two appearances this season, coming in the opening two Premier League games, suffering a knee injury which has ruled him out of action for all the club’s games so far.
Meanwhile the Belgian centre back has been missing since limping off in the Champions League win over Real Madrid back in November, having turned out in all but one of Tottenham’s matches across all competitions prior to his layoff.
Despite what may be judged as a disappointing start to their domestic campaign, sitting in sixth after 20 games, Le Tissier has boldly stated that he does not believe the club need to reinforce too much during the winter window, instead naming the return of the defensive duo as crucial to their future success.
Writing in a column for Sky Sports’ website, he said: “I’m not sure they need to much to be fair.
“I just think they need to get Victor Wanyama and Toby Alderweireld fit and then they are sorted as a really strong defensive force again.
“It’s difficult to bring in another top-quality striker when you only play one up top because Mauricio Pochettino isn’t going to drop Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son is now contributing with more goals.”
Spurs will be hoping to close the gap of the top four on Tuesday evening, when they visit bottom of the table Swansea City, before taking on another of the bottom three, in the form of West Ham, on Thursday.
