League One club cancels post-match press conference as manager sack looms
Wigan manager Ryan Lowe could be the next managerial casualty in League One.
Lowe was appointed at Wigan in March 2025, but he has failed to turn the former Premier League club’s fortunes around.
Lee Grant was sacked by Huddersfield Town in January, and it looks as though the former Preston boss will be next.
Wigan sit 22nd in the third-tier, two points from safety with 17 matches still to play before the season concludes.
| Position | Played | GD | Points |
| 21. Burton | 30 | -12 | 32 |
| 22. Wigan | 29 | -10 | 31 |
| 23. Rotherham | 29 | -12 | 31 |
| 24. Port Vale | 28 | -18 | 22 |
Sack surely on the cards as press conference cancelled
Lowe looked like one of the favourites for the sack before the clash with Peterborough United, and now it is surely even more likely.
His side were hammered 6-1 by Posh at London Road, and it is hard to see how he comes back after the latest developments.
Wigan Observer reporter Paul Kendrick claimed on 7 February that he has been informed that there will no post-match press conference after the contest for the Latics boss.
Where has it all gone wrong for Lowe?
Lowe arrived with a reputation as a manager who likes his sideto play attacking football, and that has not been the case at The Brick Community Stadium.
He sets his side up to avoid defeat, rather than playing that front-footed football that he is usually linked with.
His team lacks identity and supporters have grown frustrated with long balls and hopeful crosses, which has not helped the side to escape relegation danger.
Survival football is not working, and it may be too late for him to turn it all around, and it will not be quick fix to get the side playing in a more entertaining manner.
It looks as though he is not going to be given a chance to do that since his post-match media duties have been cancelled.
That is usually a fatal sign for a manager, but whether that is the case on this occasion remains to be seen.
Lowe seems to be in the final stages of his tenure, and his appointment has ultimately not worked out for all parties involved.
