League One sack latest: Jack Wilshere decision is inevitable after new Luton Town development
Jack Wilshere’s job is under real threat and he looks unlikely to see out the rest of the season at Luton Town following their loss to struggling Wigan Athletic.
Former Arsenal and England star Wilshere was appointed as Luton’s new boss in October for his first full-time role in the dugout following a short spell as interim boss of Norwich City in April.
He took over at Kenilworth Road with the newly-relegated Hatters sat 11th in League One after a poor start to the season under Matt Bloomfield, with the clear aim of taking them into promotion contention.
The 33-year-old enjoyed some strong form with his new side at the start of his tenure, with just two losses in his first 13 games in charge, but they have struggled to continue those performances over the last few months.
Ryan Lowe was the last League One manager to be sacked as he left Wigan earlier this month, and his successor, Gary Caldwell, may have delivered a huge blow to Wilshere’s future at Luton this week.

Luton lost to relegation-battlers Wigan to pile pressure on Wilshere
Luton had won just two of their previous six League One outings heading into Wednesday’s clash at the Brick Community Stadium, including a 3-1 loss to table-toppers Cardiff last weekend.
Wigan have been battling relegation all season, hence Lowe’s departure, with Caldwell taking charge of his first game at the helm against Luton with the club on a run of five consecutive losses.
The two sides played out a tight game under the lights, despite the 14 places and 13-point difference, with Joe Taylor’s 73rd-minute strike settling the contest to lift the hosts out of the relegation zone.
Luton were defeated for a sixth successive time away from home, and they now occupy ninth spot, with four points separating them and sixth-placed Huddersfield.
It seems unlikely that Wilshere’s side make the playoffs this season, let alone get promoted, and he could well face the sack before the campaign ends if their poor run continues.
What do Luton fans think of Wilshere?
Luton needed a change back in October when Bloomfield was axed, but many supporters were understandably apprehensive about Wilshere’s arrival, given his lack of experience in management.
The Hatters boss will have learned a lot about himself and coaching since becoming their boss, but his first stint in such a role could well come to an end pretty soon.
Many Luton fans would seemingly be content to see him leave, with swathes of angry replies to his post-match interview on X after their loss to Wigan.
One fan wrote: “Time to put the ex-England legend (and Premier League) player experiment to bed. If it’s not worse than Bloomfield, it’s not better. Do the right thing. This is on JW. Time to go,” while another said: “Woeful interview. No answers. No clue. No idea. No hope. Time to move on – we need someone with a big character. We need someone to galvanise this once proud club.”
