'Led by example' - Exclusive: Paul Robinson names senior trio in running for Newcastle armband

Paul Robinson has named Newcastle United trio Jonjo Shelvey, Martin Dubravka and Ciaran Clark as those in the running to take the captain’s armband after Jamaal Lascelles’ injury blow.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper says that it will be difficult decision for manager Steve Bruce as to who takes charge as the leader on the pitch over the next couple of months.

Newcastle have confirmed that Lascelles, who has had the responsibility of captain since their Championship campaign back in 2016/17, will be missing until January with a knee injury suffered against Bournemouth.

With the former Nottingham Forest man out of action over a busy festive period, Robinson was torn between three senior players as to who would take his place as Bruce’s captain until his return.

Asked who he thought could take the armband, Robinson told Football Insider: “Somebody like Jonjo Shelvey could fill the void quite easily, he’s led by example with his performances, he’s got himself back in the time, he’s obviously a character in the dressing room, he’s been key to what they’ve done with their improvement.

“The goalie (Dubravka), that’s not a bad shout actually, he’s going to play every week, he’s an older head, experienced as well, that’s not a bad shout, another contender.

“Ciaran Clark, there’s your other Newcastle captain. He’d be a good option, he’s a regular, experienced, plays week in, week out, I think he’d be a good option.”

Clark has scored twice in Newcastle’s last two games against West Ham and Bournemouth, with Shelvey having returned to the starting XI for both matches.

Dubravka meanwhile has been a mainstay for the Magpies since joining from Sparta Prague, starting every Premier League match since his switch.
