Ledley King names Tottenham 27-year-old as vital to Pochettino success

By Dominic Toner

Ledley King has hailed the importance of senior Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

The 27-year-old has recently returned from a 10-game absence through injury and slotted back into the back four alongside Jan Vertonghen at centre-back.

He is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and has excelled since he moved to White Hart Lane in 2015 from Atletico Madrid.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has chosen the Belgium international as his first-choice centre-back as he fits his passing style of football, while also being able to fulfil his defensive duties.

The north London club host Hull on Wednesday night and Alderweireld will hope to steer his side back into the top four of the table.

Ex-Spurs defender King believes that Alderweireld is pivotal to the team’s success and hailed him as an all-round defender.

“He is a huge part of our success,” King said, as quoted on Tottenham’s Facebook live session. “It is not just his defending, his passing and he can start off attacks and it’s great to have him back.”

Alderweireld played every single Premier League game last season and was crucial in Spurs’ title challenge, but they were just edged out by Leicester and Arsenal in the latter stages.

The defender spent a season on loan at Southampton in the 2014/15 season and caught the attention of several top clubs in England.

Spurs managed to secure his signature on a permanent basis and he has already become a fan favourite at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino is hopeful that his side can compete for the league title this season and Alderweireld will be crucial if they are to achieve their first Premier League crown.

In other Tottenham news, Pochettino claims that this player must bide his time at the club.
